The Malawi Congress Party (MCP) says it will not change its resolution that bars new members from contesting at its August slated convention.

The resolution from the Party aimed at setting political order not allow new members dubbed ‘greedy political harlots’ from contesting at the upcoming convention avoids significant implications for the party dynamics.

Addressing the media over the weekend, Chairperson for the convention’s steering committee Kezzie Msukwa said all members who are eligible to contest during party convention in August this year can collect nomination forms starting, 1st July, 2024.

Msukwa indicated that the committee has not received any changes on issues of eligibility as earlier announced by party National Executive Committee (NEC) stating that anyone whose membership is less than two years is not eligible to contest.

“Until this day, the criteria for one’s eligibility to contest in the August convention remains unchanged, we have not been communicated of any changes,” said Msukwa in response to a question during the briefing.

Commenting on issue of defectants, Ken Nsonda who was fired from the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) late last year to join MCP, commended the MCP leadership for maintaining its resolution.

Nsonda was present during the Press conference at MCP Headquarters in Lilongwe when Steering Committee for 2024 MCP Indaba updated the nation on some developments.

“I came as one way to support the resolution made before of two year membership period for one to contest during party convention even though I am new in the party,” said Nsonda.

Visibly seen to have swallowed in the bitter pride, Msonda said there are some positions that cannot be just opened up to anyone just like what other people were thinking.

“There is no way that a person can come from nowhere and contest for a sensitive position like of President, Secretary General or Treasurer General,” he added.

MCP will go to the convention as the country plans to go for tripartite elections in September next year (2025) where people will elect through voting President, Members of Parliament and Ward Councilors’.
