MCP Reacts To UTM’s Alliance Fallout
The Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has come out saying it is not shaken with news that its key alliance partner United Transformation Movement (UTM) has left the Tonse Alliance.
On Friday, the UTM Central Executive Committee announced that it has decided to abandon the alliance saying it sees no future forging ahead with a political marriage that is not beneficial.
The decision however is subject to endorsement by the party’s National Executive Committee to be held soon aimed to map the way forward in preparation for the next year’s general election.
In response to UTM’s position, MCP secretary general Eisenhower Mkaka said the exodus is unfortunate but does not spell the end of the alliance, adding there are still more parties that believe in the Tonse partnership.
“It is unfortunate for the UTM has decided to leave, but let us be reminded that the alliance had a total of nine political parties of which many are still intact,” said Mkaka.
