MACRA Intensifies Digital Transformation

Mzuzu City, Malawi: The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) organized an open day in Mzuzu City on Monday, aiming to showcase its efforts in achieving digitalization and foster collaboration with stakeholders.

During the open day, MACRA engaged on several key topics having brought together industry players, decision-makers, and consumers to discuss critical issues related to digital transformation.

In Digitalization initiatives MACRA highlighted ongoing projects aimed at enhancing digital services across Malawi. These efforts include expanding broadband access, improving connectivity, and promoting digital literacy,

The stakeholder engagement also provided a platform for direct interaction between MACRA and stakeholders where by participants discussed the role of various players in advancing digitalization, emphasizing the importance of collaboration for successful implementation.

MACRA’s Director of Legal Affairs Thokozani Chimbe stated that in light of recent challenges such as Cyclone Freddy and the spread of fake news, the Authority strives to address the need for robust cybersecurity measures.

Chimbe said that the emergence of fake news as a stain on public consciousness has prompted the formulation of a new cyber crimes law, which is now a bill awaiting submission to the communication ministry for parliamentary consideration, emphasizing consumer rights and responsibilities in the digital age with Participants learn how their rights as users of communication services and the laws governing MACRA’s authority.

Speaking at the event, Chairperson for media, information and communications committee in Parliament, Susan Dossi reaffirmed the authority’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and effective regulation. She stated that open days would continue to be a valuable platform for engaging stakeholders and promoting a vibrant and inclusive communications sector.

“The issue of cybercrime is now worrisomely on the rise, so these open day series which began sometime back reaching other regions in ensuring that communities across Malawi have a voice in shaping the country’s digital future are very important,” Dossi said.
