Malawi Reports Two Suspected Mpox Cases, Health Ministry Urges Confirms
The Malawi Ministry of Health has confirmed two suspected cases of Mpox (formerly known as monkeypox) in the country. Health Minister Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda announced that a 31-year-old man is currently isolated at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre, while a 17-year-old boy is being managed at home in the same city.
Notably, neither patient has a history of international travel, sparking concerns about local transmission. Dr. Kelvin Mponda, Director at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital, expects test results for the first patient today.
While urging citizens not to panic, health officials emphasized the importance of following health guidelines, including maintaining personal and public hygiene.
Meanwhile, a meeting of health experts is underway in Lilongwe to establish preventive measures for Mpox, according to some health experts.
The Health Ministry has assured the public that necessary measures are being taken to contain the suspected outbreak and prevent further transmission.
Citizens are advised to remain vigilant, practice good hygiene, and report any suspicious symptoms to health authorities immediately.
This development comes as the global health community continues to monitor the Mpox outbreak, which has affected several countries worldwide.
