Karonga,Malawi: The state vice president, Michael Usi has emphasized his unwavering commitment to preserving and honouring the vision and values that the former vice president Saulos Chilima instilled in the UTM party and the nation.

In a passionate address to a large crowd of United Transformation Movement (UTM) supporters at Karonga Square on Thursday, (September 19, 2024) Usi, who is the President of UTM declared himself the sole custodian of the legacy of the late Dr. Saulosi Klaus Chilima.

Dr. Usi, who was visibly emotional, paid tribute to Chilima, describing him as a visionary leader whose dedication to UTM and Malawi left an indelible mark.

“Chilima’s leadership will forever be etched in the annals of history. His wisdom, humility, and unique approach to governance have left an indelible mark, not only on our party but on this country as a whole,” Usi stated.

Reflecting on his personal journey, Dr. Usi expressed deep gratitude to Chilima for recognizing his potential and choosing him as his Vice President.

“I will always be indebted to Chilima. He saw something in me, something I didn’t even fully see in myself at the time, and chose me as his Vice President. I will never forget that, and I will not stray from the path we agreed to walk together,” he added.

Dr. Usi reiterated their shared mission of empowering the people of Malawi, particularly the youth. He highlighted ongoing efforts to work with the National Economic Empowerment Fund (NEEF) to provide loans and support to young entrepreneurs, enabling them to create enterprises and transform their communities. He also announced the creation of the Vuwukani M’matope loan initiative, aimed at helping those without collateral to establish their own businesses.

The atmosphere at Karonga Square was electric as hundreds of UTM supporters, filled with energy and excitement, accompanied Usi on a one-kilometer walk, dancing and singing in a jubilant display of loyalty underscoring the deep bond between him and the UTM faithful, further cementing his role as the torchbearer of Chilima’s legacy.

Some political observers says as the 2025 elections approach, Michael Usi’s commitment to carrying forward Chilima’s vision will be crucial in rallying support and ensuring the continued relevance of UTM in Malawi’s political landscape
