Zikhale Engages South African Government on Malawian Migrants
The governments of Malawi and South Africa have initiated crucial discussions to tackle the migration challenges faced by Malawians living in South Africa.
The development follows a meeting between Homeland Security Minister Dr. Kenneth Zikhale Ng’oma and South Africa’s Interial Minister Dr. Leon Schreiber on the sidelines of the 75th United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) session in Geneva, Switzerland.
Minister Ng’oma highlighted the numerous challenges Malawians face in South Africa, including deportation and threats to their lives.
“Malawians based in the Rainbow nation are facing numerous challenges ranging from deportation and threats to lives among others,” said Zikhale.
In response, Minister Schreiber assured that; “South Africa is committed to working with Malawi to address the migration issues.”
This bilateral effort is timely, considering the complex migration dynamics in Southern Africa.
Historically, South Africa has been a primary destination for migrants from neighboring countries, including Malawi, due to its relatively stronger economy. However, this has also led to tensions and xenophobic attacks, underscoring the need for cooperative solutions.
The collaboration between Malawi and South Africa aims to: address deportation concerns ensuring the safe and dignified return of Malawian migrants, enhance security by protecting Malawians from threats and violence, fostering economic cooperation and promoting mutually beneficial economic opportunities.
