Mozambique-Malawi Launches Cross-Boarder Mobile Pass Initiative

Malawi and Mozambique have launched a joint technical working group to implement a cross-border mobile pass initiative, aimed at enhancing trade and mobility between the two nations.

The initiative, launched in Blantyre on Tuesday, seeks to reduce illegal migration, human trafficking, and improve security along the shared border.

According to the Minister of Homeland Security Kenneth Zikhale Ng’oma, this initiative is crucial in addressing the challenges facing the two countries.

“The cross-border mobile pass initiative will help reduce illegal migration, trafficking in persons, and improve security between Mozambique and Malawi,” Zikhale emphasized.

Nomagugu Ncube, Chief of Mission for the International Organization for Migration (IOM), highlighted the initiative’s potential to boost revenue collection.

“This initiative will be critical in improving revenue collection, facilitating cross-border trade, and promoting economic development,” she noted.

The cross-border mobile pass initiative is part of the Southern Africa Trade and Connectivity Project (SATCP), funded by the World Bank aims to enhance trade facilitation, reduce barriers to trade, and promote economic integration in the region.
