Malawi Celebrates Human Rights Day

December 10, 2024, marks the 76th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) adoption by the United Nations General Assembly.

Human Rights Day celebrates the fundamental rights everyone is entitled to, regardless of race, gender, religion, nationality, or other factors.

The United Nations underscores that upholding human rights involves addressing present injustices and empowering marginalized groups.

Alexious Kamangila, a prominent human rights lawyer, has been named Human Rights Defender of the Year.

Currently studying in Ireland, was represented by Sellina Kainja, who received the award on his behalf. The event honoured individuals risking their lives to uphold justice and equality.

This year’s theme, “Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now,” emphasizes the significance of human rights in shaping a better tomorrow.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted in 1948, outlining fundamental rights for all individuals encouraging collective action towards a more peaceful, equal, and sustainable world.
