The National Registration Bureau (NRB) will commence registering marriages under the newly approved Marriage, Divorce, and Family Relations Amendment Bill.

This development follows the bill’s passage in Parliament on Wednesday, granting the NRB Director authority to manage marriage registrations, as announced by Minister of Justice Titus Mvalo.

Mvalo emphasized that the registrar of marriages, currently based at the Registrar General’s office, will transfer marriage records to traditional authorities.

“The NRB will now assume responsibility for registering marriages, in addition to its existing duties,” said Mvalo

Among others the Bureau will be issuing;

  • Birth Registrations (birth certificates)
  • Death Registrations: Issuing death certificates
  • National ID Card Issuance: Registering adults for national ID cards
  • Resident Foreigner Documentation: Issuing legal identification documents for resident foreigners

As a government department under the Ministry of Homeland Security, the NRB is mandated by the National Registration Act of 2010 to implement, coordinate, manage, and maintain the National Registration and Identification System (NRIS).
