Controversy Erupts Between Ndlozi and Bushiri Amidst Extradition Speculation

A significant controversy has arisen between Dr. Mbuyiseni Ndlozi, a prominent South African political figure, and Prophet Shepherd Bushiri, a Malawian religious leader, following a recent public lecture at the University of Malawi.

The lecture, organized by Malawi’s Minister of Trade and Industry, Vitumbiko Mumba, focused on issues of corruption and exploitation within Africa. Ndlozi, during his address, criticized certain religious leaders for what he described as “stealing from the poor in the name of God,” though he did not specify individuals.

The lecture, themed “People over Politics: A Bold, Righteous and Inextinguishable Idea,” aimed to challenge conventional political leadership and governance in the context of African development.
A rhetorical question posed by Ndlozi, “Why am I rich?” was widely interpreted as a veiled reference to Bushiri, prompting a strong response from the religious leader.

Bushiri issued a statement accusing Ndlozi of harboring jealousy and xenophobic sentiments. “Seriously, why? How did I even come into your political lecture? Can’t these jealous, poorly rated politicians like him leave me alone? Your question about my wealth is nonsensical,” Bushiri stated.

Bushiri, who has faced scrutiny in both South Africa and Malawi regarding his financial holdings and church organization, defended his wealth by emphasizing his contributions to the Malawian economy. “Malawians know why I’m rich—I help the poor and create jobs. Just last year, I created over 5,000 jobs through my farms and the Goshen City project,” he asserted.

He further questioned Ndlozi’s credibility, referencing Ndlozi’s past disagreements with Julius Malema, another South African political figure. “Is this the reason you betrayed your brother Julius Malema? Next time, focus on politics,” Bushiri concluded.

The exchange has generated diverse reactions on social media. Some have defended Bushiri, while others have questioned the origin and authenticity of his response. Comments on platforms such as Zodiak Online’s Facebook page reflect these varied perspectives.

One commenter, Yolamu Mganga, stated, “I don’t think it is every Malawian benefiting from Bushiri’s investments if it is a shield to evade trial elsewhere, first things first.”

This controversy highlights the ongoing tension between political and religious leaders in Africa, particularly regarding wealth, influence, and the fight against corruption. The exchange also occurs amidst ongoing speculation regarding potential extradition proceedings against Bushiri, adding another layer of complexity to the situation.
