Malawi has been a loyal member of the regional trade and governance block, the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) which is providing opportunities to leaders to reflect on how best to govern their countries.

As per custom the Malawi leader, Lazarus Chakwera is attending the 42nd Ordinary SADC Summit of Heads State and Government taking place in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)

Commenting on his social media pages the Malawi leader expressed gratitude for meeting his Zambian counterpart, His Excellency Hakainde Hichilema with whom he said has enhanced the two countries bilateral trade ties.

“I met my brother – Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema and agreed to enhance our bilateral trade ties by working together to eliminate all barriers to cross-border trading and finding sustainable solutions for the advancement of both nations, “ writes Chakwera

He further stated that discussions also centered on the review of the existing Simplified Trade Regime (STR) with a view of expanding the list of eligible products traded remains a top priority for both countries.

“This speaks to the construction of a One-Stop Border Post at the Mchinji- Mwami border, which will ease cross-border trade between Malawi and Zambia, we have agreed to launch the One-Stop Border post jointly, details of which will be shared in due course.

I also conveyed our gratitude for the arrest of Chinese National Lu Ke, who had fled to Zambia following allegations of racial exploitation in Malawi,” writes the president.

Chakwera also highlighted that Zambia was also supportive when 3 members of Central Medical Stores Trust, who had gone for a study tour died in a road accident in Monze, Southern Province in the neighbouring country by expressing appreciation for the support rendered while the Zambian leader offered his condolences.
