Mzimba-Luwerezi Parliamentarian Reduces Mobility Challenges Through Concrete Slabs

Following the heavy rains which are wrecking havoc in many parts of the country including the washing away of roads, member of Parliament for Mzimba-Luwerezi, Sam Chirwa has embarked on the construction of concrete slabs on some parts of the road to Luwelezi which have been left impassable.

Constituents have been finding it difficult to travel to and from the M1 Road connecting to either markets or health facilities hence the need to patch up the road with concrete slabs in some difficult to pass areas.

In an interview with Malawi Daily Telegraph Online Publication, parliamentarian for the area, Sam Chirwa said despite government failure to respond to his plea to improve the road condition in his area, with the backing of the Village Development Committees (VDC) and the Area Development Committees (ADC) he decided to use the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) to make the road passable.

“Yes this is one of CDF developments, we have been having a lot of problems when passing on this road mainly this area as we are going to Luwelezi, it will help people of Khosolo to pass through when connecting to the M1 Road with their farm inputs and produce,” Chirwa said.

He further stated “I thought of renovations because l have been standing in Parliament on several times asking Government to help but up to now no action, l therefore thought of working on all the bad areas so that at least the road can be passable”

Apart from the road maintenances the parliamentarian is also initiating a CDF Health Center development project with one medical officer’s house also being constructed.

Mzimba-Luwerezi is a predominant agricultural area contributing to the country’s economic growth with cash and food crops such as tobacco, groundnuts, soya, maize, peas, potatoes and cassava but has mobility challenges due to poor road infrastructure.
