DPP Tough On Parallel Structure Formulation
By Draxon Maloya
Mzuzu, Malawi: The Director f Operations in the former ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Joe Thomas Nyirongo has warned those busy going about formulating parallel party structures in the Northern Region risk facing a strong disciplinary action.
The warning comes amidst confirmed reports of some party members going around in the northern region forming parallel structures within the party formation but royal to some candidates vying for presidential and other positions at the forthcoming elective party convention.
Speaking to the media on Tuesday in Mzuzu, Nyirongo said his office is receiving numerous updates of every move those busy dividing the party are making despite the silence from the National Governing Council.
“The politburo responsible for operations in the DPP is aware of every step being taken by those thinking that they are clever, dividing the rank and file in the district and aerial structures in the northern region, but it’s a matter of time soon someone will be disciplined for that,” Nyirongo
However, the Operations Director did not mention names of the officials busy formulating the said parallel structure though it is clear that the former Regional party governor, Kenneth Sanga made the point clear that he is now the chairperson for the sprinter group supporting the candidature of Kondwani Nankhhumwa for the position of DPP president.
Addressing the media Sanga warned that it is against the democratic culture enshrined in the party constitution to gag any party member from associating with any candidate of choice considering that soon the party will hold an elective convention.
Efforts to speak to the Regional Party Governor for the north, Reverend Christopher Mzomera Ngwira proved futile as he is reported to be outside the country attending to family matters.
“It is against the party constitution to gag anyone from associating with who so ever is the candidate of one’s choice, mind you our party has one of the best constitutions protecting the values and principles of democracy,” Sanga said.
Meanwhile, DPP NGC is yet to meet to confirm whether the party convention will be held considering the expiry of the mandate of the current office bearers by 2nd July this year.
