President Dr Lazarus Chakwera has reminded Malawi nationals living in the diaspora to always consider investing in their home country for continued significant development of the country.

The call comes in the wake of some prominent Malawian nationals establishing businesses in foreign countries which could spur a significant Socio-economic development more particularly job creation for the country’s youth.

Chakwera made the remarks in Sandton City, South Africa, during an engagement meeting with Malawian business people based in South Africa.

The President said Malawians living abroad and investors should realize the wide investment opportunities the country can offer them.

He cited among other areas the mining, agriculture, tourism, and transportation as some of the key sectors in which one can invest into and create a huge impact in contributing towards achieving the Malawi 2063 agenda and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Speaking after the meetings, Minister of Finance, Sosten Gwengwe, said it is the role of every well-meaning Malawian to play a significant role in the development of the country.

“The President has just emphasised Malawi will only develop if the citizens take the lead in championing development,” he said.

Representatives of business people living in South Africa, Fumu Msiska, described the meeting as fruitful and assured the President that the team is ready to invest back home.

The Malawi leader arrived in South Africa on Sunday ahead of the BRICS Summit, a grouping of five countries comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

Other leaders are attending the summit at the invitation of South African President, Cyril Ramaphosa.
