Mzuzu Golfers Tee-Off After Six Years
Excitement aroused golfers in Mzuzu City on Saturday when they gathered to revive their lovely sport by playing Social Golf in preparation for the upcoming competitive tournaments.
The Social Golf tournament has not only helped in assessing the rehabilitated course but also built a sense of community among the golfers who last played on the brown-type golf course way back in 2017.
Mzuzu Golf Club captain Chrispin Mphande commended the Club’s new executive committee and the Sunbird Mzuzu Hotel for reviving activities at the golf club while expecting hope for the sustainability of the quality condition ahead of a tournament in two weeks.
“It requires efforts from all the golfers and other partners to ensure the course is in its best form, our new executive and the Sunbird Mzuzu Hotel have done a commendable job,” Mphande said.
The Entertainment Director for Mzuzu Golf Club Chester Kayange confirmed the course hosting the tournament in a fortnight whose organizers earlier planned it to be staged in Dwangwa.
“lt is the excitement, enthusiasm and timely maintenance of the course which will enable golfers to practise their skills during such social golf tournaments which undoubtedly contributes to a successful tournament like the one coming ahead in a fortnight,” Kayange said.
Speaking from Mangochi in a telephone interview the Mzuzu Golf Club President Othaniel Hara appealed to the corporate world to overwhelmingly sponsor competitions at the Club which he said it’s course has reclaimed its top-notch quality.
“Golfers in the northern region has been unable to play games for the past six (6) years. This is an appeal to the corporate world to come forth and sponsor tournaments at Mzuzu Golf Club,” Hara said.
Hara further stated that his committee is working in fulfilment of its campaign promises having assured the Club members that before the end of this year, the course which was in a bad state will be functional and be ready to host major tournaments.
In a related development, the State President of the Republic of Malawi His Excellency Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera on Saturday (21 October 2023) participated in the 2023 Presidential Initiative fundraising Golf Tournament at Lilongwe Golf Club, whose proceeds will go a long way in assisting needy University students.
