Some quarters of the society are still doubting as to whether it really happened, the fantastic news about the Malawi National Women Soccer team (the scorchers)’s triumph at this year’s COSAFA tournament that was held in Johannesburg, South Africa.

It will take year’s if not decades of sweet memories and inspiration to see a women sports team achieve great success and showcase their talent on an international stage.

Upon arrival at Chileka Airport in Blantyre on Monday signs were clear that the victory of the Malawi National Women’s Soccer Team at the COSAFA championship do not only highlights their incredible skills and dedication but also serves as a powerful reminder of the positive impact of empowering girls and women in sports.

In what can rightly be described as the spirit of patriotism and quick response of the corporate world, Sunbird Hotels and Resorts led the way by hosting the Scorchers to a dinner at Sunbird Mount Soche Hotel in Blantyre upon arrival.

Associating the hospitality industry with victory Sunbird’s Head of Sales, Marketing and Distribution, Temwa Kanjadza said: “We are proud of the national women’s football team’s historic achievement, which coincidentally came on Mother’s Day”.

In his remarks the president of the Football Association of Malawi Water MacMillan Nyamilandu reiterated the relevance of supporting the girl-child saying when girls are encouraged to participate in sports and given equal opportunities, it not only benefits their minds individually but also promotes gender equality and breaks down societal barriers.

“By witnessing the Malawi National Women’s Soccer Team’s achievements, it encourages other girls and young women to pursue their dreams in sports and serves as an example of what can be accomplished when everyone is empowered,” said Nyamilandu.

The FAM boss further stated that the victory do not only bring pride to Malawi but also sends a message to the world that investing in girls’ and women’s sports has the ability to create more inclusive societies and empower individuals.

The Sports Minister Uchizi Mkandawire said the victory showcases the beauty of gender equality and reinforces the importance of equal opportunities in all aspects of life.

“The success of the Malawi National Women’s Soccer Team in the COSAFA championship is a wonderful achievement, and I hope it inspires even more support and recognition for women’s sports globally,” said Mkandawire.
