Scorchers Wins COSAFA-Gold On Mothers Day

The Malawi National Senior Wonen’s soccer team (the Scorchers) on Sunday treated the nation to surprise Mothers Day gift having clinched gold at this years Confederation of Southern Africa Football Association (COSAFA) tournament held South Africa after beating Zambia 1-2 during regulation time.

Speaking to SABC the corchers coach Lovemore Fazili echoed his earlier remarks saying that his charges met Zambia just for the championship formality having already won it after beating South Africa in the quarter finals.

“We could not afford to lose it after beating South Africa in one of our games enroute to the final stage, this victory is indeed a Mothers Day gift to all Malawians,” Fazili told SABC.

In a statement issued just after the match financier of the team’s trip to the tournament Prophet Sherperd Bushiri thanked the girls for putting a galant fight and rewarding the nation by winning the trophy.

Writing on his Facebook page the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) president Walter MacMillan Nyamilandu hailed the Scorchers for wiining the COSAFA trophy for the first time describing it as the real ‘Raising the Bar’.

“Bravo to the Scorchers for making history by winning the COSAFA Women’s Cup for the first time. They have sent a strong message that the girl chid in Malawi deserves support.

“I salute their perseverance and hard work. There is nothing like seeing the Malawi flag flying higher!,” writes Nyamilandu.

Having clinched gold at COSAFA tourney as per custom it is likely that a dinner or breakfast with the first couple His Exellency President Lazarus and his wife Monica Chakwera awaits the Scorchers.
