Mzuzu SoyMilk Half-Marathon Growing Bigger And Better
Chimwemwe Mwanyali has defended his championship in the 21 kilometre Mzuzu City Half Marathon which drew a total of 203 athletes competing for honours.
Running in the second edition of the Marathon on cloudy Sunday provided a very conducive environment enabling Mwanyali to break the record having clocked 1 hour 6 minutes and 47 seconds to finish the race against the last year’s record of 1 hour 8 minutes.
In the female category, Fostina Mbemba from Moyale Barracks emerged champion having finished the 21 kilometre race in 1 hour 25 minutes 24 seconds.
The Sports Minister, Uchizi Mkandawire was expected to grace the event which was organised by the Malawi National Sports Council in collaboration with the Mzuzu City Council but the vice chairperson for the Malawi National Sports Council, Charles Ulaya represented him.
The event which drew both male and female athletes from across the country witnessed the champions in both categories cutting home K1.5 million cash prizes.
Curtesy of Lilongwe Dairy Limited, the manufacturers of SoyMilk who contributed almost K8 million in cash and hampers made it possible for all the winners even for those on second positions to take home K1 million while those on third positions got K500 000.00 on top of other consolation prizes.
Vice Board chairperson of the Malawi National Council of Sports, Charles Ulaya Banda assured athletes that government will continue supporting the initiative hence appealed to the private sector to continue supporting.
“Government will continue bankrolling this beautiful event but let me appeal to the corporate partners to consider assisting for the smooth and successful implementation of the event,” Ulaya said.
Meanwhile, the Mzuzu City Half Marathon organising committee is contemplating turning the event into a full 42 kilometre event considering the overwhelming response it is getting since its inauguration last year.
