Competition & Fair Trading Commission Closes Sugar Selling Points

The ministry of trade and industry has on Saturday closed some sugar selling outlets in Lilongwe for allegedly over-pricing of the product.

In a statement issued in the capital city, the ministry says after conducting an inspections in the city together with the Competition and Fair-Trading Commission (CFTC), they have closed down area 2-based Romana Trading, Chou Chou shops and Shalom shop in Area 25.

The two sugar distribution agencies were selling a bale of sugar at K69,000 instead of the recommended K37,500.

Meanwhile, Simama General Dealers shop based at Nsungwi in Area 25 has also been closed for hoarding sugar.

The country is facing a shortage in supply of sugar, and the ministry has warned to close down all shops that are selling the sugar at higher prices and further have their business licenses revoked.
