President Lazarus Chakwera on Saturday visited the Mzuzu Main and Zigwagwa markets which is an important part of his engagements with the citizens in the northern region of the country.

The visit exited Vendors who felt good seeing the president connecting with people at the grassroots level.

Upon arrival Chakwera was taken to the Main Market Car park pavilion where the Mzuzu City Council officials displayed a designated plan for the modern multi-storey market to be constructed in the city in line with the vision 2063.

In his address the Malawi leader gave hope to the vendors stating that despite economic hardships there’s good progress in NEEF loan repayment of the K80 billion meant for the current program.

However, the president then made an appeal to those struggling to repay their loans not to commit suicide as a way of evading debts.

“Despite economic challenges affecting loan repayment, no one should commit suicide because every loan has a better balance between the recipient and those disbursing the funds,” Chakwera said.

In his remarks, Minister of Local Government, Richard Chimwendo Banda thanked the president for a number of development projects being carried out in the city.

He also hailed the president for the extensional Social Cash Transfer Program which will benefit 12 000 vulnerable families in the city of Mzuzu.

In the afternoon Chakwera continued meeting people from all walks of life including chiefs, block leaders and sectional leaderships of the Mzuzu City vendors.
