Former leader of the Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC), Timothy Mtambo has joined the Alliance for Democracy (AFORD).

Mtambo’s joining of AFORD and his appointment as it’s vice president is a significant development for the party, potentially in bringing new perspectives and support.

Mtambo who saved as Unity and Civic Education minister Lazarus Chakwera led government confirmed the development on Saturday in Nkhotakota where the party president Enoch Chihana conducted a political rally.

His experience as a human rights defender and leader of the Citizen for Transformation (CFT) will likely strengthen AFORD’s advocacy for democratic values and human rights in the country.

“Citizen for Transformation – CFT group is merging ideologies with those of AFORD as members of the group have also joined the party.” Mtambo said.

Both Mtambo and Chihana asked people to vote for the party in next year’s elections saying it is geared to address challenges that people are facing in the country.

The Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) is a political party that is known for laying the groundwork for a multi-party system in the country as an underground political movement during the Kamuzu Banda era and later developed into a political party during Malawi’s multi-party era under the direction of the trade unionist, Chakufwa Chihana.
