DPP Parliamentarians Gang Up Against Impunity

Threatened by some dictatorial tendencies currently taking place in the former ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), its back benchers in the National Assembly addressed the press in Lilongwe on Thursday to express their concerns with developments quickly unfolding in the party which they say are gradually killing intra-party democracy.

Led by Mwanza Central Legislator Nicholas Dausi the parliamentarians say DPP as a party is governed by the constitution and that it has to be followed.

Dausi said nobody is to take the party as a personal estate as the party constitution demands that after every five years there must be an elective convention stressing that the party will not allow impunity to keep happening within party

“it is not bad to endorse candidates but it would be proper for the party to start preparing for the convention and it is the mandate of the president together with the Secretary General of the party to call for it” said Dausi.

Without declaring the presidential candidate of his choice, Dausi added that people in the party have different preferences on who they want to vote for and should be accorded a chance to choose by voting at the elective indaba.

Meanwhile, the DPP regional offices for the south and eastern region are refusing to endorse the party president, Peter Mutharika as party’s torch bearer in the 2025 presidential election.

This follows similar endorsements led by the DPP vice president for the North, Goodall Gondwe, and his committee as well as Zeria Chakale, DPP vice president for the center and her regional committee.

However, during the recent Blue Night fundraising dinner and dance held in the city of Blantyre, Mutharika made his decision clear that he would not contest in the 2025 General elections and when time permits he will guide party loyalists whom they will vote for.
