Unlocking Literacy Potential: MELT’s Mission for a Brighter Future

For 12 years, the Malawi Early Literacy Team (MELT) has trained teachers to enhance early reading and writing skills among young students in the northern region.

By empowering teachers and providing resources, MELT is contributing to a culture of reading among young Malawians. With continued support, the initiative is further enhancing literacy levels in the country.

MELT-US Chairperson Heather White highlighted the program’s impact saying the programme delivers direct instruction to teachers, provides books through workshops and a mobile book van, and maintains a central library in Mzuzu City.

“Serving schools in the North has narrowed the gap in illiteracy levels through special teaching systems and methodologies.” White said.

White further hinted that the initiative has been benefiting 40 teachers annually, improving skills knowledge and provided textbooks to over 20 schools across including the hard to reach areas.

MELT Country Director Hon. Sam Chirwa emphasized the program’s benefits and called for support from government and corporate stakeholders.

“It’s time we collaborate with the Ministry of Education to establish effective teaching methodologies,” Chirwa said.

MELT’s efforts align with the National Reading Programme (NRP), introduced in 2016 to improve reading skills among primary school students.
