The Malawi UK Military Community closes the year in a true Military fashion

It was a classy affair at Stratford Manor Hotel as the Malawi UK Military Community (MUMCo) capped 2022 in style following the flurry of activities that characterised the year with a special Christmas Dinner and Dance dubbed “Black-Tie Dinner and Dance’ for community members, their families, the Malawi High Commission.

Embracing the spirit of hard working and patriotism earlier this year the MUMCo also made news headlines when it hosted the Malawi National Netball Team to a barbecue that was held in Birmingham when they were taking part at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

MUMCo is a network of British Armed Forces personnel of Malawi heritage, which conducts events for the benefit of communities in the United Kingdom (UK) and Malawi..

Speaking at the colourful Black-Tie Dinner and Dance where most serving personnel were clad in their various Corps Mess Dresses, the Vice Chairperson of MUMCo Chimwemwe Musicha expressed satisfaction with the strategy the soldiers’ and veterans’ community are taking.

Some Colourful moments

“As an organisation our main effort is to create an identity through the activities that we are conducting, for our Malawi initiatives, we would like to be working in conjunction with the Malawi High Commission right here in UK, not only for charity events  but also to make a positive contribution towards the overall Malawi 2063 Strategy.

“Our existence here does not have to be a brain-drain to Malawi, but rather we should strive to turn it into a brain-gain for our motherland,” said Musicha.

In response, representing the Malawi High Commissioner to UK, Reverend McDonald Sembereka encouraged the grouping to continue being a good advert for Malawi.

We’re the Commonwealth, Sembereka

“Your service in the Armed Forces is by extension a service to the commonwealth and therefore to Malawi, the Embassy has agreed to take more interest in MUMCo in addition to other Malawian Associations, particularly during efforts to engage in various activities in Malawi,” said Sembereka.

Looking forward to the New Year, MUMCo plans to  send a consignment of clothing that expected to be donated in aid of communities that were affected by flooding in 2021.

Meanwhile, the consignment is due to reach Malawi in February next year (2023) as the MUMCo also looks forward to continue with its efforts to assist the Royal British Legion distributing the Poppy in the UK, a fit they have been engaged with since 2021.

Malawi always at heart

In the year now going by the MUMCo conducted a number of activities including among others, playing football matches in an effort to integrate with other Malawian associations.
