A military coup is taking shape in Sudan, soldiers have captured the airport and loud gunfire and smoke have been reported in Sudanese capital Khartoum.

Clashes broke out across the country , mainly in the capital city of Khartoum and the Darfur region, between rival factions of the country’s military government.

As of 18 April, at least 188 people have been killed.

Gunmen thrown all over Khartoum

The fighting began with attacks by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on key government sites as airstrikes, artillery and heavy gunfire were reported across Sudan including in the capital Khartoum.

Following the clashes, two aircraft are known to have been destroyed while parked at Khartoum International Airport, a Saudia Airbus A330-300 (HZ-AQ30) and a SkyUp Boeing 737-800 (UR-SQH).

Meanwhile, all flights at Sudan’s Khartoum Airport have been cancelled and Airlines are also avoiding the airspace of Sudan.

As of 15 April 2023, both RSF leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo and de facto leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan claimed to control over key government sites, including the general military headquarters, the Presidential PalaceKhartoum International Airport, the Army chief’s official residence and Sudan TV headquarters.
