21-year-old Joshua John from Phalombe has invented a gadget that can be used to power a house, along with household electrical appliances for up to 8 hours.

The device stores power once it has been charged with electrical or solar power.

“Apart From powering house bulbs, this power bank can also be used to power electrical appliances like the fridge, a cooker an iron and the like for over 8 hours when the house has no electricity.

“It’s an alternative to a power generator where there is no electricity and the beauty of it is that it doesn’t need fuel and it doesn’t make noise like generators,” he said.

Commenting on the invention, former Minister of Energy Newton Kambala, who also was once a lecturer of Electrical Engineering at the Polytechnic (now Mubas) said since he bought the invention from John, saying he does not worry about blackouts and that he can use it for more than 8 hours.

“This can help in the growth of economy once embraced and this is the way foward to deal with blackouts.

The Powerbanks

“All what I am asking for is support for this young man because this is a national treasure,” he said.
