Chakwera Calls For Multi-lateral Bloc In Rebuilding Trust

His Excellency the State President Lazarus Chakwera has addressed the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) with a candid call for the multilateral bloc to live by its promise of rebuilding trust and reigniting global solidarity as per this year’s theme.

The Malawi leader reminded member states that collectively world leaders have failed to take bold decisions towards global solidarity, peace and prosperity stressing that the global village is still sustaining manipulated global social, trade and economic systems that favour only a few.

Chakwera then proposed remedy to expedite achievement of Sustainable Development Goals by all members includes urgent support towards weaker economies to make them resilient in the face of all forms of social and economic shocks.

“This support must include climate financing and a considerate debt management intervention. I have repeatedly asked rich nations to cancel the debts of vulnerable economies so that we all catch up towards attainment of the Global Goals,” Chakwera said.

He further added that the structure of the United Nations have radical reforms towards inclusivity.

“Africa must have a permanent membership slot with veto power in the UN Security Council. This way, the continent will be assured of a permanent voice that will fully protect our interests,” he said
