The Malawi Network of Older Persons Organization (MANEPO) has learned with deep shock leading to the condemnation in strongest term the conduct of some villagers at Kasamba in Neno for attempting mob justice on an elderly person accused of practicing witchcraft.

The helpless old man is being accused of having a hand in the death of his grandson, whom he has been staying with since childhood until his death after a short illness.

In a voice note sent to this publication on Tuesday signed by the organization’s country director, Andrew Kavala, confirms MANEPO having already sent a delegation to Zalewa roadblock to assess the situation and the needs of the 89-year-old man, Binwell Chabwera where he is seeking refuge.

“MANEPO has learnt with great shock the hostile conduct in which some relations to the 89 year old Binwell Chabwera , we condemn and rebuke the conduct which could lead to the loss of life of Mr. Binwell Chabwera who is need of food and nonfood assistance,” said Kavala.

Meanwhile, the older person’s body has provided food and non-food items to the granny, who is being housed at the Zalewa roadblock police unit for fear of being subjected to all sorts of human rights violations.

MANEPO’s statement has commended the Malawi Police Service for a swift response in rescuing Chabwera who is visibly, mentally and physically traumatized
