Mzuzu City Honors Iconic Family with Street Naming Recognition

In a momentous occasion set to take place on October 28th-29th, the Kanyemba-Mvula family, renowned for their groundbreaking ventures including the first driving school, butchery, and disco in Mzuzu city, will be celebrated with the naming of one of the bustling Central Business District (CBD) streets after them.

The Kanyemba-Mvula family, whose impact on Mzuzu dates back to 1952, has significantly contributed to the city’s socioeconomic growth. From establishing the first driving school to introducing Mzuzu to the world of disco entertainment, their legacy has been etched into the city’s history.

Mvula Street, connecting the M5-Kamuzu Highway to Rose Chibambo Road through Nkhata-Bay Taxi-Rank, will stand as a testament to the family’s enduring influence and commitment to Mzuzu City’s progress.

Expressing his heartfelt gratitude, Goodwin Mvula, a former Ward Councillor and deputy Mayor for the city, praised the State President, Dr. Lazarus Chakwera, the Ministry of Local Government, and the City Mayor for this esteemed recognition. “I dedicate this honor to the Mvula family,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of the recognition for the entire family.

The late John Kanyemba Mvula, patriarch of the family, laid a strong foundation by establishingthe successful businesses and contributing significantly to the city’s growth through tax remittances. The incumbent Councilor for Jombo Ward Chiyembekezo Mvula, who came on a UTM ticket, highlighted the exemplary leadership of his father and older brother, Goodwin, underscoring their positive influence on the family’s image and the city’s development.

Beyond their family’s recognition, Councilor Mvula commended the government’s practice of honoring individuals through street names. He urged authorities to consider other influential figures like Rodger Nkhwazi, Bazzare Nyirenda, Chenda Mkandawire, Majighaheni Gondwe, Zingilirani, and Chimpozo, recognizing their significant contributions to Mzuzu City’s growth.
