Chakwera Warns Against Exploitation of Land Owners
President Chakwera highlighted the need for a more transparent and fair process when it comes to land transactions to ensure that the livelihoods of villagers are not jeopardized.
The head of state emphasized the importance of supporting small-scale farmers and ensuring that their land rights are protected.
Speaking at the opening of this year’s tobacco marketing season, the President urged the Department of Lands to take action against estate agents who engage in unethical practices and exploit vulnerable communities.
“It is worrisome to find out that most of the maize in farmyards in Kasungu District is not for the people here because they sold land to those who are using it for farming purposes,” Chakwera revealed.
In conclusion, President Chakwera called for a collaborative effort between the government, the Department of Lands, and local communities to address this issue and prevent further exploitation of villagers.
“By working together, we can create a more equitable and sustainable land management system that prioritizes the needs of small-scale farmers and promotes food security in Malawi,” he said.
Regarding the country’s population boomerang, the Malawi leader echoed a stern warning to those sending the girl child to early marriages, saying the law will catch up with them.
He also commented on the construction of 10,000 houses across the country for officers in the security services, stating that his government will ensure that all the houses are constructed.
Concluding his address, Chakwera made a special appeal to all stakeholders involved in the country’s tobacco industry to join hands to ensure that farmers benefit the most.
